Waste Management - Strategic Plan, Policies & Guidelines

Waste Management - Strategic Plan, Policies and Guidelines

The Federal governments National Waste Policy (NWP) has set the target to:

  • Reduce total waste generated by 10% per person by 2030
  • Recover 80% of all waste by 2030
  • Phase out problematic and unnecessary plastics by 2025
  • Reduce the amount of organic waste by 50% sent to landfill by 2030

A KESAB local bin audit (September 2020) revealed the household (red lid) bin contained 45% food waste.  Council introduced (July 2021) a Food Organic and Green Organic (organic) kerbside collection to organic waste to be made into compost.

Councils provides a fortnightly collection of three waste streams to residents and weekly to businesses.  Food organic and green organic material MUST be placed in the organic (lime green lid) bin as it is sent to a processing plant and made into compost. Recyclable materials MUST be placed in the recyclable (yellow lid) bin as it is sent to NAWMA for processing and forwarding to recycling plants.  By placing recyclables and organics in the correct bins, will significantly reduce the general household (red lid) bin contents.

Council supports Federal government initiative to reduce valuable resources ending up in landfill.  By providing a recycling and organics kerbside collection service supports Council to achieve the NWP targets and enables Council to access funding, education initiatives and standardised marketing campaigns and tools. (eg Funding from Green Industries SA assisted with the purchasing and distribution of the Kitchen Caddy Bins and compostable bags at no charge to residents and businesses).

All businesses (commercial, industrial and light industrial rated properties) and individuals have a responsibility to ensure the waste they generate is sustainably managed. Council has incurred significant state government waste levies and transport cost increases, and is committed to planning and implementing effective and efficient waste systems to minimise waste ending up in landfill.  Individuals utilising the kerbside collection can support Councils commitment by sorting and recycling household waste correctly, as contamination recycling and green waste has no other option but to end up in landfill.

Waste Policies & Guidelines

Council has development Policies and Guidelines to support sustainable waste management practices and is in the process of adopting a Waste Management By-Law.
