Hairdressing, Beauty and Skin Penetration Businesses

Hairdressing, Beauty and Skin Penetration Businesses

As an Authorised Officer of the Public Health Act, Council's Environmental Health Officer is required to conduct routine inspections of all:

  • hairdressers
  • beauty salons
  • tattooists
  • body piercers and
  • acupuncturists.

All business and operators must have in place infection control techniques and procedures to prevent the transfer of micro-organisms, risks and health issues associated from skin and blood infections.

Hairdressers that offer skin penetration procedures (including waxing, pedicures and permanent makeup), must comply with the Guideline on the Public Health Standards of Practice for Hairdressing which must be read in conjunction with the Guidelines on the Safe and Hygienic Practice of Skin Penetration as items such as razors, scissors, combs, clippers and hairpins can accidentally pierce the skin, therefore blood and or body fluids might not be visible on working surfaces or tools but could still pose a health risk.
