Bin Compliance and Purchasing

Mobile Garbage Bin (MGB) – Compliance and Purchasing

Does Council supply residents with the Mobile Garbage Bin?

In the Copper Coast, all bins are purchased and owned by the residents and businesses, which they can take with them if the move.  This saves ratepayers money from having to subsidise the purchase and ongoing replacement of bins that are damaged or lost by others in the community.

Bins must comply with the quality standards and Council specifications:

The standards sets out the design of the bins (including the colour and markings) ensuring uniformity and functionality for users, contractors and mechanical emptying systems, plus the performance requirements and testing methods ensuring the capacity and strength of the bin is suitable for the purpose intended while being UV-stabilised and chemical resistance to increase the life of the bin.

The specification sets out the correct size of the bin (as it varies for a residential or business collection) and the lid colour (which reflects the waste stream).

Frequently Asked Questions

- My bin wasn’t emptied, what do I do?

Was a sticker left on your bin?

No, phone Wardles Contractors to identify:

  • If the bin was missed; or
  • The truck is running behind schedule; or
  • Maybe your bin was put out on the wrong day.

Yes, if the Contractor identifies that your bin or its contents is non-compliant, a sticker will be attached to the bin with an explanation as shown below.

Should your bin not be emptied, you will be required to arrange to empty it at the Resource Recovery Centre.

You can take the bin to the Resource Recovery Centre, hand over the sticker from the bin to the RRC staff, and you will be able to empty your bin at no charge.

Please note , that if you do not give the sticker to the RRC staff, charges will be incurred.

- Can I still use my 120-litre dark green lid bin as my general waste bin?

The 120 litre dark green lid bin is the older style bins which across South Australia are progressively being phased out to align with the Australia standards.  The dark green lid/dark green body bin can no longer be purchased and has been replaced with the red lid/dark green body bin. As a resident in a resident collection area, you can still use the older style bin, but once it becomes damaged and unusable, it must be replaced with a 140-litre red-lid bin. The red lid bin offers an extra 20 litre of space for waste and are shorter but wider, making them less likely to tip over during strong winds.

- What do I do if I live in a rental property and don't have a bin or need a replacement?

If you are a tenant, Council suggests that you contact your landlord or property manager to request a new/replacement bin for the property. Any bins that the landlord purchases must stay with the property when you vacate.

What do I do if I live in a Housing SA property and don't have a bin or it has been stolen?

If you live in public housing and in the event that your bin is stolen, you will need to report it to the police and obtain a Police Report number to report it to Housing SA to get a replacement.
