Waste Education and Programs

Copper Coast Council is committed to providing ongoing support and education to the local business, residents and visitors.

This includes (but not limited to):

  • Engaging industry specialists like - KESAB to deliver specialised school and community education programs.
  • The waste management team are available to provide presentations on recycling and waste management to community groups, schools and businesses and tours of the Resource Recovery Centre.
  • Fact sheets, brochures and calendars - available to download from the website or collection at Council’s main office.
  • Advertising in the local newspaper, radio and television
  • Articles in the quarterly Copper Post
  • Regular ongoing promotion on Council’s Facebook page.

Take the Pledge

In early November 2021, Copper Coast Council implemented the Take the Pledge program in partnership with KESAB environmental solutions to encourage and foster sustainable behaviour change, focusing on household waste and recycling.  This program is similar to City of Unley that has been running since 2016, designed with community-based social marketing principles, attracting 1900+ participating households who committed to recycling more and diverting as much organic material as possible into the organics bin.

Register to Take the Pledge

Residents are encouraged to participate in Copper Coast Council ‘Take the Pledge’ and register by completing the online form below.

Registered residents will:

  • Receive a sticker to place on their Organic bin to demonstrate their commitment to the initiative to reduce as much valuable material going to landfill as possible.
  • Receive regular emails on ideas to support circular economy and sustainable waste management practices.
  • Go into the draw for one of the fifteen prize packages where you could win a 6x4 trailer load of Peats Organic Compost plus a $50 local hardware store or nursery voucher.

TAKE THE PLEDGE – TERM AND CONDITIONS

The promoter is the Copper Coast Council, 51 Taylor Street, Kadina SA 5554, and KESAB Environmental Solutions, 214 Grange Road, Flinders Park SA 5025.

Eligibility

Entry is available to Copper Coast Council residents only. Staff can register but are not eligible to be judged to win a prize.

Dates

Registrations will be received from 1st November 2021.

Competition dates will run bi-monthly from 1st February 2022 until TBA.

Judging

Ten (10) registered participant organic bins per township group will be randomly selected and inspected during each competition periods.

Township groups

  • Group 1 - Kadina and surrounding suburbs
  • Group 2 - Wallaroo and surrounding suburbs
  • Group 3 - Moonta and surrounding suburbs
Winners will be announced on Council's Facebook page and in the YP Country Times, a week after the last day of each competition period.

Prizes

A total of 15 prizes available valued at $100 each.

Each notified winner will receive:

  • a voucher entitling them to collect a 6x4 level trailer load of Peats Organic Compost
  • a $50.00 gift voucher for local hardware store or nursery.

Moonta Hardware and Camping – Will give each winner (who selected Moonta Hardware and Camping as their store of choice) a further $20 voucher to spend in-store.

Hardware – Will give each winner (who selects Wallaroo Hardware as their store of choice) a 20% discount on purchases in-store (some exclusions apply, ie power tools).

Kennetts of Kadina – Will give each winner (who selects Kennetts of Kadina as their store of choice) a further $50 voucher to spend in-store.

How to enter

  • Using the Copper Coast Council website, entrants must submit the Take the Pledge online form.
  • No responsibility will be accepted for late, or misdirected entries or entries sent but not received by Copper Coast Council.
  • All Copper Coast Council residents who pledge their commitment will be sent a sticker to place on your bins to demonstrate their commitment to reducing landfill.

Competition timeline and structure

  • Residents who have completed and submitted a Take the Pledge form can enter.
  • Only bins with a Pledge sticker will be included in the judging.
  • Pledges received via the online form are categorised into groups based on the kerbside collection areas R1, R2 and R3 (R4 will be grouped with R1 - refer to the Kerbside Collection Calendar).
  • A collection day will then be selected by random, with up to 10 households within each group randomly chosen for inspection bi-monthly.
  • The selected households will be allocated a number from 1 up to 10 and inspected in order from number 1 to 10.
  • The first house inspected in the group that is deemed by the judges to be effectively sorting their waste will be selected as the winner.
  • The judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

The KESAB Kerbside Bin Audit (September 2020), of the general waste bins audited:

  • 45% was actually organic material
  • 17% was actually recyclable materials
  • 2% was actually hazardous materials that cannot be placed in kerbside waste collection.

The KESAB Kerbside Bin Audit (September 2020), of the recyclable bins audited:

  • 45% was plastic materials
  • 38% was paper materials
  • 12% was metals
  • 3% was 10 cent containers
  • 2% was glass.

In the first quarter (July-Sept 2021) residents diverted 763.68 tonnes (59%) of kerbside collected waste from landfill, compared to 352.26 tonnes (31%) in the first quarter (July-Sept 2020).

The results is a significant achievement and incredibly promising. Council looks to maintain this diversion with minimal contamination through education and community engagement.
