Native Bee BnBs

NATIVE BEE BNBS

Copper Coast Council partnered with Landscape South Australia - Northern and Yorke, Australian Plants Society Northern Yorke Peninsula Group and community volunteers to build native bee hotels (BnBs) and plant native species to provide food for bees across the Copper Coast.

Native bees are excellent pollinators of fruit trees and vegetables and are a great asset in the home garden. They also pollinate many native plants. In fact some of our native plants can only be pollinated by native bees. Native bees will benefit from better habitat and more food, thanks to a community-led project funded by Landscape South Australia's Grassroots Grants program.

The $4,622 grant received went towards two free Native Bee Workshops in Moonta and Kadina (7 & 8 April 2021), with Bee expert Dr Katja Hogendoorn explaining the fascinating lives of native bees and why they’re so important for our gardens and crops. The workshops also focused on creating native bee BnBs that would be installed at town reserves. An opportunity was also given to access materials and plants for the public to create their own at their homes.

On World Bee Day (Thursday, 20 May 2021), all involved joined in on planting bee-friendly plants across the Copper Coast and officially opening the 9 Native BnBs spread across the Copper Coast.
