Fire & Burning

Fire Danger Season

Between the 15th November and  30th April (fire danger season)

Burning is STRICTLY PROHIBITED

During the Fire Danger Season fire restrictions apply throughout the whole state. CFS Regulation booklets are available from Council's District Office, 51 Taylor Street, Kadina. This booklet provides information on Permits, Barbecues and Campfires, Total Fire Ban Days, Fire Ban Districts, Reserves/National Parks, Emergency Warnings and a survival guide/checklist.

Permits for the 'burning off' of land will not be issued prior to 15th February. After you have received your permit, Council must be notified of your intention to burn before 12 noon on the day of the burn off. This can be done either by phone (08) 8828 1200 or by filling out our online form which is available by clicking here.

Total Fire Bans may be declared on days of extreme weather conditions (high wind and high temperature). These bans will apply for 24 hours, midnight to midnight, and will often be broadcast on radio and television from 6.00 p.m. Please check the CFS Fire Ban's Hotline on 1300362361 if in doubt or click here.


CONDITIONAL PERMIT
BURNING SEASON
15 February to 30 April
Fires must not be lit on any total fire ban day

Fires shall not be lit on Saturdays, Sundays or Public holidays

Fires shall not be lit before 10am and must be extinguished by 9pm.

No burning without a permit

**A permit must be obtained from the Kadina Council Office this can be arranged by telephone on (08) 88281200, this needs to be carried out at least 1 day prior to burning, allowing the Council authorised officer to assess the permit application and to give the permit holder time to read & understand new conditions for the Copper Coast area.  All permit conditions can be viewed on the links below.

** Once you have a permit, it is a requirement for you to notify the Council of your intention to light the fire prior to 12 noon on the day of the burn. This notification is also available online by clicking here.

Bushfire Prevention Requirements

  • 1. All grass and undergrowth (within 20 metres of buildings and assets) shall be reduced to a maximum height of 10 centimetres, in rural areas.
  • 2. Trees should be pruned to provide a vertical break around buildings. Gutters should be cleaned of flammable debris.
  • 3. All grass and undergrowth on a property in a town shall be reduced to a maximum height of 10 centimetres.

If residents are in breach of these conditions fines notices will be issued.

Burning in the open

Residents in Kadina, Moonta, Wallaroo, North Beach and Paskeville are advised that apart from the normal controls relating to the Fire and Emergency Services Act 2005 and pursuant to Schedule 1 of South Australia Environmental Protection (Burning) Policy 1994 under the Environmental Protection Act 1993, Council has resolved to prohibit the burning of matter by a fire in the open or in a domestic incinerator in any domestic premises situated in those zones within the District Council of the Copper Coast shown on the Development Plans as:

(a) land zoned for residential purposes
(b) all Country Township zones
(c) Kadina Town Centre zone
(d) Historic (Conservation) Zone - Moonta Town Centre
(e) Holiday settlement (Wallaroo North)

Residents are also advised that the total prohibition does not apply to:

(a) any fire within a dwelling (eg slow combustion heaters)
(b) any fire used principally for the preparation of food or beverage or for the heating of a potable liquid (eg barbeques, picnics)
(c) the burning of charcoal within a brazier principally for the purpose of heating an area used for outdoor entertainment
(d) burning off by a person for the purposes of reducing the hazard of bushfires providing Council has permitted in writing that act or the burning is by permit under the Fire and Emergency Services Act 2005.
(e) the burning of wood treated with chemical preservatives is completely prohibited
(f) any Council land or premises outside the boundary of any municipality or township within the district

Please Note: Persons who offend against the provisions for control may be fined a maximum of $10,000 or expiate the offence by the payment of $315.
