COPPER COAST NAIDOC WEEK CELEBRATION

Copper Coast Council is hosting the second annual Copper Coast NAIDOC Week Celebration on Monday, 4 July 2022 from 11am at Queen Square in Moonta.

NAIDOC Week starts on the first Sunday of July (3–10 July 2022), with events held all across  Australia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Council is pleased to be partnering with local organisations Nharangga Aboriginal Progress Association Inc and Aboriginal Cultural Tours SA, who will be performing the Nharangga address, Welcome to Country, Flag Raising and Smoking Ceremony on the day.

Copper Coast Mayor Roslyn Talbot is pleased to continue this tradition of celebrating, supporting and better understanding our local Nharangga people and other Indigenous communities.

“Bringing the Copper Coast community together to celebrate our First Nations people is a great first step, but it’s also about getting to know the faces within our local Indigenous communities and building those relationships,” Mayor Talbot said.

“By hosting this event for NAIDOC Week and working with our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and leaders, we are creating the opportunity to build relationships and trust.”

This year's NAIDOC Week theme is "Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!", and Mayor Talbot is encouraging the community to do exactly that on the first Monday of next month.

“After the success of last year’s inaugural event, I’m hoping the event grows as more members of the Copper Coast community gather to learn more about our region’s Indigenous culture, celebrate the history and mingle with one another.”
