Council supports alternative energy sources to assist in reducing the carbon footprint.

Unless your property is in a State or Local Heritage Place, solar photovoltaic panels do not require development approval if:

  • the designed photovoltaic system does not exceed a total weight of 100kg

  • the designed photovoltaic system's weight exceeds 100kg:

    • is distributed so that it does not exceed 100kg at any one point of attachment to the roof

    • the panels do not overhang any part of the roof

    • the panels are fitted parallel to the roof with the underside surface of the panels being not more than 100mm above the surface of the roof; and

    • the panels are installed by an accredited installer

  • if property is in a local heritage place, solar panels must be installed in a position that cannot be seen from ground level in a public place.

Properties with a Land Management Agreement (LMA) or Encumbrance registered on the Certificate of Title of the property, may have some requirements relating to the location of solar panels.
